Track Record: Rincon was the Phillies’ 14th-round selection in 2022, drafted out of Shaler Area High in Pittsburgh. He began his career with a dozen games--including two home runs--in the Florida Complex League before getting a bit more experience at instructional league that fall. He showed excellent plate discipline at a pair of Class A stops in 2023, finishing with nearly as many walks (68) as strikeouts (76).
Scouting Report: When the Phillies drafted Rincon, they expected an excellent defensive shortstop but were surprised with the offensive aptitude and output he showed in 2023. Rincon did an excellent job controlling the zone and making contact, with in-zone miss and chase rates of 11.7% and 16.6% between both levels. There’s still a bit of work to be done, and scouts say he needs to adopt an approach that lets him better use the whole field. Scouts observed near-identical setups from both sides of the plate but a more controlled swing from the left side compared to more powerful, violent cuts when hitting righthanded. Despite a smaller stature that is mostly filled out, Rincon’s advanced idea of the strike zone and strong wrists give him a chance to add some power if he can add more of a load to his swing mechanics. Defensively, he’s likely to stick at shortstop but could move off the position if his lower half gets too thick. He shows strong defensive instincts, the footwork to move to his left well and just enough arm strength to make the throws from the 5.5 hole. If he does move from shortstop, he has the chops to earn regular playing time at any infield spot.
The Future: Rincon has the top-end ceiling of an everyday shortstop who hits toward the bottom of the order but is more likely to settle in as a super-utility player who provides plenty of defensive value.
