A shorter righthander listed at 6-foot, 185 pounds, DeVos doesn’t have overwhelming stuff, but he does have a strong performance track record and exciting fastball characteristics. DeVos got some draft attention in 2021 as an eligible sophomore after he posted a 1.48 ERA as a reliever with Davidson, but he stepped into a full-time starting role in 2022 and posted a 2.40 ERA over 78.2 innings, with 106 strikeouts (31.3 K%) and 31 walks (9.1 BB%). His fastball sits in the 88-91 mph range and touches 95, but it has around 20 inches of induced vertical break that help the offering play up. He throws a fringy slider in the lower 80s and will infrequently use both a mid-70s curveball and a mid-80s changeup, but mostly works off the fastball/slider combination. In general, he has shown good command overall and will be more appealing to teams who value his fastball shape than old school scouts who want to see a more projectable body or impact stuff.

BA Grade: 45/High
Track Record: DeVos spent his first two collegiate seasons pitching out of Davidson’s bullpen. He went undrafted as an eligible sophomore and made a successful jump into the Wildcats rotation. DeVos earned first-team all conference honors by going 9-2, 2.40 and leading the Atlantic-10 Conference in strikeouts. He was selected by the Astros in the fifth round of the 2022 draft and signed for a below-slot bonus of $197,500. DeVos began 2023 with Low-A Fayetteville and made 13 appearances before he was promoted to High-A Asheville.
Scouting Report: DeVos mixes four pitches in a four-seam fastball, slider, curveball and changeup. His fastball and slider see the majority of his usage with his curveball supplementing the slider against lefthanded hitters. DeVos’ fastball sits 91-92 mph but what it lacks in power it makes up for in shape, with heavy ride and late life. His primary secondary is a mid-80s slider with ride and around 7-9 inches of sweep. The slider outperformed the rest of DeVos’ arsenal this season, driving whiffs in and out of the zone. DeVos’ curveball sits 77-78 mph with moderate two-plane break and is his go-to secondary against lefthanders but induces few swings and misses. DeVos’ rarely thrown changeup sits 85-86 mph with moderate fade. DeVos shows above-average command of his fastball but fringy to below-average command of his secondaries.
The Future: DeVos’ fastball shape and quality slider give him a chance to make it as back-of-the-rotation starter, but his high-ride fastball and slider might ultimately work best in the bullpen.
