View Draft Report
In his first three years at Tennessee, Lipscomb started 12 games and hit two home runs. In 2022, he started 66 games and hit 22 home runs, tied for the second-most in a single season in Tennessee history. In the process he has journeyed from being largely off of teams’ radars to becoming a quality senior sign. There is some length to his swing, and scouts don’t see a lot of adjustability, but he’s shown legitimate power this year, and he has a knack for finding pitches where he can extend his arms and drive the ball. Defensively, he’s average at third base with an above-average arm. A fringe-average runner, Lipscomb could play all four corner spots in pro ball—he’s dabbled with left field in the past. Lipscomb is one of a number of quality senior signs. His lack of leverage and his age (22) likely will lower his signing bonus, but his skill makes him a legitimate fifth-round talent.

BA Grade: 40/Medium
Track Record: The Nationals felt Lipscomb flashed enough in his senior season at Tennessee to warrant a full-slot $758,900 bonus in the third round of the 2022 draft. He made a good first impression in 23 games with Low-A in 2022. He opened the 2023 season with High-A Wilmington and hit .251/.311/.387 in 49 games before being promoted to Double-A, where he hit .284/.310/.438 line in 80 games.
Scouting Report: Lipscomb is a versatile infielder who has shown some feel to hit, though it’s unclear exactly where he ultimately ends up defensively. He has a relaxed setup in the box, stands at the plate with good posture and swings with conviction. His longer, flatter bat path leaves the barrel in the zone a touch longer than average. He showed good adjustability in 2023 upon arriving in the upper minors. There’s work to be done with his approach. Lipscomb is an aggressive hitter who chased out of the zone frequently and walked just 27 times in 129 games. Lipscomb is an athletic defender with a slightly above-average arm who played every infield position. The Nationals believe he’s good enough to slot in at any of them.
The Future: If Lipscomb can work more walks and tap into a bit more power, the Nationals believe he can be a multi-positional semi-regular. He could reach the majors at some point in 2024, though Washington’s projected future infield mix includes Brady House at third base and CJ Abrams at shortstop and possibly Luis Garcia at second base.

Track Record: The Nationals drafted Lipscomb out of Tennessee in the third round in 2022 and signed him for full slot value of $758,900. In his first three years with the Volunteers, the infielder didn't get a ton of reps, but he made up for it in his senior season. He began his pro career with Low-A Fredericksburg and looked calm, cool and collected during at-bats.
Scouting Report: Lipscomb looks comfortable at the plate and waits for pitchers to make a mistake. He keeps things simple, trusting his athleticism and hands to drive the ball. Lipscomb has an ability to make changes at the plate, which has turned heads in the organization. His swing follows a flat bat path and his exit velocities in his pro debut were modest, but his 22 home runs with Tennessee during the 2022 season were the second most in a season in the program's history. He has an average arm, which could play well at third base. However, the Nationals' plan is to develop him as a true utility player, despite getting all of his fielding innings at third base in his pro debut. Lipscomb can play all around the infield.
The Future: Lipscomb is seen as a player who has a little bit of everything, including power, defensive skill and speed. How his bat progresses as he faces more advanced pitching will ultimately determine his future role.
