Track Record: Gauthier started all four years at shortstop for Hofstra and was one of the Colonial Athletic Association’s top hitters as an upperclassman. He went undrafted as a senior, but Dodgers farm director Will Rhymes, a former CAA shortstop at William & Mary, found Gauthier and led the team to sign him as an undrafted free agent. Gauthier led the Dodgers system with a .441 on-base percentage in his first full season and followed with an even better year in 2023. He hit .312/.435/.476 and led the organization in hits (148), walks (100) and runs (111) while advancing to Double-A.
Scouting Report: Gauthier is a disciplined hitter with elite strike-zone recognition. He has more walks (226) than strikeouts (221) in his career and consistently conducts high-level at-bats. Gauthier has a good feel for picking out pitches to drive and makes consistent contact with a compact, level righthanded swing. He uses the whole field and turns around both fastballs and secondary offerings. Gauthier doesn’t hit the ball overly hard, but he reworked his body to get stronger and has started to drive balls. He projects to be an average hitter, who posts high on-base percentages and reaches double-digit home runs. Gauthier doesn’t have a true home defensively, but he is an average defender at second base and is playable at third base, shortstop and left field. He makes the routine plays and has average arm strength.
The Future: Gauthier’s ability to reach base and play multiple positions give him a path to be a bat-driven utilityman. He should see Triple-A in 2024.
