View Draft Report
Tommy John surgery cost Cameron his chance at raising his draft stock in 2021, leaving teams to rely on his work in the short 2020 college season, as well as his work in the Northwoods League last summer. Cameron is not a fireballer. He sat 88-91 mph between Central Arkansas and the Northwoods League in 2020. His fringe-average fastball is used to set up his better above-average changeup. The changeup gives him a shot, but he needs to add more velocity to have pro success.

BA Grade: 45/High
Track Record: Cameron made just 18 starts at Central Arkansas after losing his junior season to Tommy John surgery. The Royals made him their seventh-round selection in 2021 and signed him to a below-slot $197,500 bonus. Cameron quietly took a step forward in 2022 when he struck out 53 batters in 31 innings with High-A Quad Cities. He returned to the level again in 2023 before earning a promotion to Double-A northwest Arkansas, where he posted a 6.10 ERA in 72.1 innings with 74 strikeouts.
Scouting Report: Despite sitting in the low 90s, Cameron generated plenty of whiffs at the lower levels with his fastball because of its deceptive life and carry through the zone. His fastball did not fare as well in his first taste of the upper minors and would benefit from added velocity. The Royals have seen Cameron touch 95 mph and believe there’s more in the tank. Cameron struggled with his endurance and holding velocity following surgery and plans to address the issue with an aggressive offseason conditioning plan. His best secondary pitch is a plus low-80s changeup with good vertical separation off his fastball, as well as tumbling action and good command. He also shows feel for an above-average upper-70s curveball with 11-to-5 shape and tight break that he throws for strikes and tunnels well with his fastball. He does a good job repeating his delivery.
The Future: Cameron will return to Double-A northwest Arkansas looking for another chance against Texas League hitters.

Track Record: Cameron got only 18 starts during his college career at Central Arkansas after losing his junior year to Tommy John surgery. The Royals grabbed him in the seventh round in 2021 and signed him to a below-slot $197,500 bonus. Cameron got back on the mound in 2022 with 19 starts split between three levels--with excellent results at each stop. Most notable was an eye-popping 13.6 strikeouts per 9 innings while walking just 2.2 per nine.
Scouting Report: A touch-and-feel southpaw, Cameron commands all three of his pitches. His tick below-average fastball sits 88-91 mph and touches 94, with good carry and movement. His best secondary pitch is a plus changeup at 79-81 mph with tumbling action and deception thanks to the lower speed--which also helps his fastball play up. Cameron has good feel for a 77-80 mph above-average curveball with 11-to-5 shape and tight break that he throws for strikes and tunnels well with the fastball. He also mixes in a cutter that flashes plus. Cameron's arm action and repeatable delivery work and he's recognized as having the best control in the organization.
The Future: Now that he's more than two years removed from surgery, Cameron is ready for a full season of work and will get that chance in 2023 with a move to Double-A. He's an intriguing pop-up prospect with a high floor because he throws strikes and knows how to pitch but needs to prove himself against more advanced hitters.
