Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
Age At Draft: 21.4
Sim is the son of former Korea Baseball Organization slugger Jong-Soo Shim, who hit 328 career home runs in 15 seasons in the KBO and earned the nickname “Hercules” for his prodigious strength. Sim inherited his father’s power and hit 25 home runs over the last two seasons at San Diego, finishing among the West Coast Conference leaders both years. He also hit five home runs for Orleans in the Cape Cod League last summer, albeit while batting .239 with a nearly 30% strikeout rate. Sim is a strong 6-foot-2, 210-pound righthanded hitter with huge raw power. He hits gargantuan home runs when he connects, particularly to his pull side, and pulverizes pitches left over the middle of the plate. Sim does most of his damage against mistakes and is prone to swinging and missing against good velocity and quality breaking pitches. His pitch recognition and plate discipline are fringy, and he projects to be a below-average hitter who racks up high strikeout totals to go with his home runs. Sim played third base in college, but he is a below-average runner with slow footwork and minimal range and projects to move to first base. His average arm strength makes him an option in left field if needed. Sim’s power is his only tool better than average, but it’s big enough to get him drafted in the top 10 rounds.
