Track Record: The A’s made Gonzalez one of their top international signings in 2022 on the strength of his offensive-oriented profile and makeup. He debuted that year and returned to the Dominican Summer League in 2023, hitting .218/.361/.320 in 44 games while walking nearly as many times as he struck out despite dealing with nagging injuries.
Scouting Report: Gonzalez’s profile derives considerable value from his bat. He has a chance for above-average hitting and average power. Gonzalez is at his best utilizing the whole field with a quick swing and a line drive-oriented approach. He has shown feel for the barrel and a mature understanding of the strike zone, posting solid chase and whiff rates for an 18-year-old. Gonzalez has above-average raw power, but gets himself into trouble when he sells out to reach it. Gonzalez’s receiving and throwing accuracy is far more raw. He has solid arm strength and aptitude, but questions about whether he’ll stick behind the plate continue to linger. He’s a fringe-average runner now and will likely slow down as his 6-foot-2 frame continues to fill out. Some think he’s athletic enough to handle a move to left field, though, if he ultimately moves out from behind the plate.
The Future: Gonzalez has the upside of an offensive-minded backstop. He should begin 2024 in the Arizona Complex League, where he must show better durability and consistency.
