Track Record: Gil has rarely been the most physically impressive or toolsiest player on the field, but he’s often been one of the savviest. As a 5-foot-9 middle infielder, he’s a little undersized, but he makes that work for him. That’s especially true at the plate, where he has a small strike zone and a short stroke.
Scouting Report: Gil rarely takes a bad at-bat. He knows the strike zone and is happy to let a wild pitcher walk him. He knows how to use the entire field and was one of the more polished hitters in the Florida Complex League, with a short, line-drive swing that helped him finish in the top 10 in the league in batting average. He has well below-average power. His intelligence is just as apparent in the field. Gil is better at second base than shortstop thanks to his average range and average arm, but he makes the routine play at both spots and always seems to know how much time he has to make the play. With the Tigers’ glut of second basemen who can’t play shortstop, Gil will likely get plenty of chances to show he can remain playable at short.
The Future: Gil’s ability to hit for average and get on base are worth watching, even if his lack of loud tools makes it too easy to peg him as a utility infielder. He should pair with Kevin McGonigle and Carson Rucker in the Lakeland infield in 2024.
