Track Record: After struggling in his first full season in pro ball in 2017, Agustin began having more success in 2018, including a .302/.368/.454 line with high Class A Potomac. However, injuries have continued to limit his at-bats, and he missed time with a broken finger this season.
Scouting Report: Agustin has made impressive strides forward with his strength, which has translated to the field and allowed the lefthanded hitter to leverage the baseball more effectively and start to hit for more power. Prior to his May injury, Agustin hit .386/.411/.659 including four of the six home runs he hit in total in 2018. Previously, Agustin had the speed to potentially play center field, but he's now a solid-average runner who fits best in the corners and spent all of his time in 2018 in left or right field. While Agustin's run tool has backed up, he's improved both his baserunning and outfield instincts--both of which were previously large question marks in his game.
The Future: Agustin shows flashes of being a solid fourth outfielder with an intriguing bat, but injuries have prevented him from putting together a full and successful season. He should get his first test in Double-A in 2019.
Agustin took a step back in 2017, his first complete year in full-season ball. He slumped to a .531 OPS at high Class A Potomac in 33 games before being sent back to the low Class A South Atlantic League for the remainder of the season. Agustin improved offensively against the lesser competition, but there are new question marks about other areas of his game, including outfield defense and baserunning. Formerly a plus runner, Agustin has added weight and is now closer to an above-average runner. He takes solid routes defensively, but he profiles more as a corner outfielder than a center fielder because of his run-grade decline. He was also caught stealing six times in 18 attempts between the two leagues (66 percent). Agustin operates with a low motor and some in the organization have questioned his work ethic because of that. The 21-year-old still has some tools and a chance to hit from the left side, but his ceiling is considerably lower now, with several questions--including minor injuries and conditioning issues--left to answer when he gets a second chance in high Class A in 2018.
Born in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Agustin moved to the Dominican Republic prior to signing with the Nationals for $50,000 in October 2013. After an impressive showing in 2015 in the Gulf Coast League and with short-season Auburn, he advanced to full-season ball in 2016. He was limited to 76 games by injuries, including an ankle injury that sidelined him for six weeks in the first half, but he held his own as a 19-year-old with low Class A Hagerstown. Agustin is an athletic, toolsy outfielder. He has well above-average speed and has built his game around it. He has good feel for the barrel and his approach at the plate is geared toward hitting the ball on the ground to take advantage of his speed. His pitch recognition skills are still developing, however, and he will need to cut down on his swing-and-miss after striking out in 27 percent of his plate appearances. His approach does not lend itself to power. His speed plays well in the outfield, and he has made strides as a defender. He has primarily played left field, but if he continues to improve his reads and routes, his tools would play well in center. Agustin will likely return to Hagerstown to start 2017 as he makes up for lost time.
