Track Record: De Oleo signed for just $10,000 out of the Dominican Republic as a “passed over” player in January 2023. He was already 18 years old when he debuted in the Dominican Summer League that June, but he quickly proved he belonged. De Oleo hit .313 with an .879 OPS in 46 games, drawing 14 walks against just 18 strikeouts. The Mets would have considered transferring him to the Florida Complex League if it weren’t so challenging to adhere to player limits for domestic minor league rosters.
Scouting Report: De Oleo stands out as an up-the-middle athlete with encouraging bat-to-ball skill. He has a tapered 6-foot-1 physique capable of adding good weight as he matures. De Oleo likes to swing the bat and put the first pitch he can handle in play. He contacts most pitches in the zone but will get himself out with weak contact by chasing. His power is well below-average currently, but his projectable frame and wiry athleticism encourage future growth. De Oleo is a reliable shortstop with the requisite actions, range and arm to continue developing at the position. He also played second base in the DSL and will probably move around the infield as he progresses.
The Future: De Oleo was one of the Mets’ most pleasant development surprises in 2023. They will see if he can keep momentum going in the Florida Complex League in 2024.
