  McGrath has taken a step forward this spring and has benefited from working under 14-year major league veteran Charlie Liebrandt as his pitching coach. His fastball sat around 88-89 mph for most of the spring, touching 91 with some sink, though it has been inconsistent and occasionally fell to 86. He hides the ball well and repeats his delivery well, throws enough strikes to remain a starter and throws fairly easily, though there is some stiffness to his delivery. His curveball has slurvy tilt but enough spin and depth to make it an average pitch in the future. McGrath hasn't had to use his changeup much. He has an athletic, defined and muscular physique at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds. He's intelligent and is viewed as a tough sign away from a Duke commitment.
