After earning pitcher of the year honors and ranking as the top prospect in the New England Collegiate Baseball League last summer, Haines looked like a potential early-round pick for 2013. That now seems unlikely after he has shown inconsistent stuff with Division II Seton Hill. Haines has a good frame at 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, and at his best he features a 90-94 mph fastball and a hammer curveball. His velocity has been down this spring, and he has pitched in the mid-80s in some outings while showing below-average secondary stuff. Still he was the Griffins' ace, going 8-2, 2.35 with 91 strikeouts and 27 walks in 77 innings. Haines had Tommy John surgery as a junior in high school and still needs to smooth out in his delivery, but he has solid arm action.
