In each of the past three years, the Braves have drafted college second basemen who have performed well in pro ball. Heffley followed in the footsteps of Phil Gosselin and Tommy La Stella with an impressive debut at low Class A Rome after a stellar four-year career at Western Carolina. The undersized second sacker was a two-time all-Southern Conference selection and 2009 conference freshman of the year, and he established the Catamount career mark with a .452 on-base percentage while ranking third with 532 total bases and 222 RBIs. A catalyst for Rome's second-half division title, Heffley demonstrated surprising power with the ability to barrel the ball on a consistent basis. He has an excellent feel for the strike zone and can bunt for base hits as well as drive the ball from gap to gap. He has above-average speed and runs the bases well. Defensively, Heffley makes the pivot well at second base, has sure hands, solid range and average arm strength. The Braves compare him to a latter-day Glenn Hubbard, only with a bit more pop at the plate. His next stop is expected to be Lynchburg.
