Drafted in the 15th round (447th overall) by the San Diego Padres in 2014.
View Draft Report
Jernigan has a pro body at an athletic 6-foot-3, 201 pounds, and was seen as a key part of a North Carolina State team with College World Series aspirations, but he and the team both had a disappointing spring. His fastball sat mostly around 88-91 mph, touching 93. It's straight but he does get downhill plane from a high three-quarters arm slot. He showed the makings of a formidable cutter in the fall but did not use it much in game action this spring. His inconsistent curveball flashes plus at its best but plays well below that. His changeup lags behind. Jernigan has below-average control that is better suited for the bullpen and had trouble turning over the lineup as a starter, averaging just over four innings per start. He throws slightly across his body and his arm action gets inverted in the back.
