Drafted in the 25th round (759th overall) by the Baltimore Orioles in 2013 (signed for $200,000).
View Draft Report
Ayers created a stir among scouts early in the spring when he reached 94 mph with his fastball and paired it with a solid curveball in the upper 70s. Southpaws with two plus pitches are a rare commodity, so he might have gone as high as the third or fourth round has his stuff not fluctuated afterward. He was operating more at 87-90 mph and struggled to throw his curveball for strikes as the draft approached. Ayers is physically mature at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, so he has less projection remaining than most high school arms. Scouts wonder if he has enough athleticism and feel for pitching to develop average or better control and command. A Western Michigan recruit, he still could get taken in the top five rounds because he's considered signable.
