Track Record: Ibarguen signed with the Brewers for just $60,000 out of Venezuela when the international signing period opened on Jan. 15, 2023, but his hitting ability and athleticism made him an intriguing sleeper. He showed why in his first pro season in the Dominican Summer League, turning 17 in July and hitting well overall before finishing on fire with a .341/.436/.659 tear in August.
Scouting Report: At 5-foot-10, 185 pounds, Ibarguen isn’t that tall, but he has a strong, compact frame. He’s a disciplined hitter for his age who didn’t chase much and has the bat control to make contact at a high clip, with a barrel tip to the pitcher in his swing but the ability to keep his hands inside the ball well. Ibarguen mostly has doubles power now but he makes hard contact for his age, with a chance for more of those doubles to turn into home runs. Ibarguen is a good athlete who signed as a shortstop but didn’t play there in the DSL, instead bouncing around between all three outfield spots and second and third base. He’s an average runner whose above-average arm could fit at third base, though he probably will continue to move around the field to develop at multiple positions.
The Future: Ibarguen has become one of the Brewers’ more promising sleepers in the lower levels of the system. If he continues to hit like he did in the DSL when he comes to the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League in 2024, he could take a big leap up the rankings.
