Garate is a lean and skinny, lefthanded-hitting shortstop with a 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame. While he needs to add more strength and power to provide an offensive impact at the plate, Garate does have sound pure hitting ability and contact skills, with a relatively simple and consistent swing that doesn’t have many moving parts. While he has room to fill out his frame, he’s also quite thin and some scouts wonder how much strength and mass he will be able to reach at physical maturity. Garate has solid actions defensively with an arm that could become above-average in the future as he develops physically, and actions that are sound, but could be more fluid. He shows choppy actions now, with a good first step and solid lateral mobility, but the industry seems split on whether he sticks at the position or not. Garate is committed to Oregon, and he could be a tough sign, but for a team who buys into his shortstop defense and believes he’ll add more power, he’s an intriguing prospect who could go somewhere after the third round.
