Many players talk about playing both football and baseball in college, but the difficulties of splitting time between the two sports (and the fact that players on football scholarships often can’t get out of spring football practice) means many end up settling quickly on one sport. Cumbest actually played both for much of his time at Mississippi State. After three seasons split between playing wide receiver and outfielder, Cumbest focused on baseball in 2022 and was rewarded with his best season at the plate. He hit .302/.347/.584 with 15 home runs. Cumbest has untapped potential remaining thanks to his massive frame (6-foot-6, 235-pounds), speed (he’s a plus runner) and power potential. He chases outside his already massive strike zone too often, but when he connects, his plus-plus raw power is apparent. Defensively, he’s still raw, but there’s the potential to be an above-average defender with a fringe-average arm. Cumbest will be 22 on draft day, so there’s a question about how much teams can develop a still inexperienced hitter in the new MiLB system, but Cumbest has more upside than most of the players who will be picked around him.
