View Draft Report
Mautz spent his first two seasons bouncing between the rotation and bullpen at San Diego before moving into the rotation full-time this spring. He quickly took to the role and tied for the West Coast Conference lead in wins (nine) while finishing second in strikeouts (124) during the regular season. His signature moment came during regionals when he dominated Vanderbilt with seven innings and one run allowed to lead the Toreros to an upset victory. Mautz is a deceptive lefthander who slings in his 90-93 mph fastball from a low arm slot. His fastball plays up with deception and angle and gets swings and misses when he locates it, but it gets hit when he misses his spots. Mautz’s sweeping, lows-80s slider is an above-average pitch that annihilates lefthanded hitters and gets in enough on righthanded hitters to neutralize them. It’s a consistent out pitch he can both land for strikes or get chase swings with. His mid-80s changeup is well below-average and is not a significant part of his arsenal. Mautz’s control has been inconsistent in the past but improved to fringe-average this year. He throws exclusively from the stretch and has some effort to his delivery. Mautz primarily projects as a reliever with his delivery, control and two-pitch mix, but he had enough success as a starter this year for teams to give him a chance to start. He projects to go in the top three rounds.

BA Grade: 45/High
Track Record: After two seasons in and out of the San Diego bullpen, Mautz made the jump to the starting rotation in 2022. He produced a standout season, went 10-2 with 122 strikeouts and 22 walks in 90.2 innings and earned all-West Coast Conference first team honors. Mautz was selected by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2022 draft and signed for a below-slot bonus of $1.1 million. Mautz debuted in 2023 with Low-A Palm Beach where he made 23 starts.
Scouting Report: Mautz is more than a sinker and slider lefty and also has feel for a changeup and the ability to generate heavy rates of chase swings outside the zone. Mautz technically mixes four pitches, but the vast majority of his pitch usage is his sinker, slider and changeup. Mautz’s fastball sits 91-93 mph with moderate sink and armside run, and while he doesn’t miss many barrels with it, he does consistently generate weak ground ball contact. Mautz’s slider is his best whiff inducing pitch and he gets swings and misses in and out of the zone. The chase rate against the pitch in 2023 was unusually high and likely the product of overwhelming Low-A hitters. His changeup is thrown more than any other pitch against righthanded batters and he typically goes straight to the pitch after getting strike one. He also throws a rarely-used curveball. Mautz’s control is below-average and will likely be exposed as he progresses through the minors.
The Future: Mautz is a back-end starter candidate with the ability to transition to the pen on the strength of his groundball-generating skills.

Track Record: Mautz spent his first two seasons alternating between starting and relieving at San Diego before moving into the rotation full-time in 2022. He broke out and led the West Coast Conference in wins, finished second in strikeouts and had his signature moment when he dominated Vanderbilt over seven innings in the NCAA Tournament to lead the Toreros to an upset victory. The Cardinals drafted him in the second round, No. 59 overall, and signed him for a below slot $1.1 million bonus. The Cardinals held Mautz out of games after signing after he pitched a full college workload.
Scouting Report: A deceptive lefthander who works exclusively from the stretch, Mautz mixes three pitches with a heavy focus on his fastball and slider. He hides the ball well to help his 90-93 mph four-seamer play up and get on hitters faster than they expect. His primary weapon is his above-average, sweepy slider in the low-80s. That silences lefthanded batters and is an effective weapon against righthanded hitters as well. Mautz will mix in a mid-80s changeup, but it's poorly executed and not a major part of his arsenal. Mautz's control is fringy and his success varies widely from outing to outing depending on if he has command of his fastball that day.
The Future: Mautz will get a chance to start, but his fastball and slider combination, stretch-only setup and fringy control project best in the bullpen long-term. He'll make his pro debut at the Class A levels in 2023.
