A member of the USA Baseball 18U national team last year, Allen started slow this spring, though he pitched better toward the end of the season. At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Allen has a strong build and a fastball that has been mostly around 88-91 mph, touching 93. His breaking stuff is better than his fastball, with outings where he would throw more breaking balls than fastballs. He throws a curveball and a slider that can blend together around 76-81 mph, but he shows feel to spin both of them and to land them in the strike zone. Allen does have a changeup, but it’s an inconsistent pitch behind the rest of his arsenal that he doesn’t use much. If Allen can squeeze a few more ticks out of his fastball and pitch in the low-to-mid 90s, that would raise his profile to become a much more intriguing prospect. He’s a Michigan commit who seems likely to make it to campus.
