Franzen pitched his way onto a lot of follow lists last fall by showing a fastball that touched 94 to go with a quality changeup. He didn’t live up to those expectations during the 2022 spring season. He struggled as a starter and was eventually moved to the bullpen in mid-April. A low-three quarters slinger with an energetic delivery and long arm stroke, Franzen does throw strikes, but the quality of those strikes wasn’t as impressive this spring. His fastball backed up to the high 80s, topping out at 93 and didn’t get much of a boost from the move to the bullpen. He does throw a low-80s, plus changeup that he can dot down and away on the edge of the zone to his arm-side. He actually commands his changeup better than his fastball. His low-80s slider is a below-average pitch without much depth or velocity.
