Jarvis ranked as the No. 298 player in the 2022 class thanks to his reliable defensive ability at shortstop, but he went unselected and returned to Alabama for his fourth season with the program. Jarvis is a small and lean, 5-foot-10, 185-pound lefthanded hitter who has well below-average raw power and will need to rely on his plus contact ability to be an impactful offensive player. He hit .273/.379/.418 in 2023, with a career-high six home runs and 10 doubles. Jarvis is a bit of a slap hitter who puts the ball in play and has historically walked about as much as he’s struck out, with a 12.7% strikeout rate and 11% walk rate in 2023. Scouts praise Jarvis’ plus defensive ability at shortstop and note his soft hands and reliable play at the position. His older brothers, Luke and Mike, played pro ball and his father, Chip, played football in college at San Diego.

Jarvis’ older brothers, Luke (Marlins) and Mike (Pirates), are both pro players. Jim has a chance to join them. The Crimson Tide’s shortstop is a plus defender at shortstop who combines range, soft hands and excellent reliability—Jarvis made only six errors all season. But his draft status is limited by his lack of any sort of power at the plate. His power is a 30 on the 20-to-80 scouting scale at best. To his credit, Jarvis knows he’s a slap hitter, and he leans into that attribute. He chokes up on the bat in his two-strike approach and just tries to put the ball in play. But he had only 11 extra-base hits all year to go with his .267/.367/.367 slash line. A team looking for a reliable org player may be willing to take a chance on Jarvis improving at the plate, and there always seems to be players like this—savvy productive college shortstops—who exceed expectations.
