Takeuchi showed solid baseball instincts as an underclassman at Rancho Bernardo (San Diego, Calif.) High but lacked strength and did not make the Area Code Games last summer. He came back significantly stronger this spring and emerged as one of the fastest risers in the draft class. He hit .520 with 13 home runs and 41 RBIs in 32 games against good competition and carried the Broncos to the CIF San Diego Section semifinals. Takeuchi has some of the best bat speed and pitch recognition on the West Coast and projects to be an impact hitter with his newfound strength. He has a compact, fluid righthanded swing with plus-plus bat speed that stays in the hitting zone for a long time and covers the entire plate. He has a mature approach with elite strike-zone discipline and rarely takes an off-balance swing. Takeuchi occasionally swings through secondary stuff, but his picturesque swing and advanced approach give him a chance to be at least an above-average hitter with above-average power at maturity. Takeuchi is an average defender at third base with reliable hands, good short-area quickness and average arm strength. He is an average runner with good agility and is athletic enough to slide over to second base if needed. Takeuchi’s lack of history on the showcase circuit gives some teams pause, but his upward trend and strong performance against good high school competition has him in top three rounds consideration for others. He is committed to Southern California and has a chance to be a top pick in three years if he makes it to campus.
