View Draft Report
Originally a South Carolina commit, Madden’s path deviated after having Tommy John surgery and then heading to Northwest Florida State JC, where he looked to add some track record to solid arm talent this spring. Scouts have seen Madden up to 96-97 mph, though he has primarily pitched in the 93-95 mph range with impressive arm-side run at times. Madden throws two promising secondaries: the first a mid-to-upper-80s slider and the second a mid-to-upper-80s changeup. The slider has solid power and vertical bite, with solid sweeping action to his glove side. He’s done a solid job keeping the changeup down in the zone, and it features hard dive and plenty of arm-side running life. Madden is tall and lanky at 6-foot-6, 185 pounds, with plenty of room for more strength, and throws from a loose, three-quarter slot but needs to refine his control and command. This spring Madden posted a 4.52 ERA over 47.2 innings, with 76 strikeouts and 24 walks. Originally a cold weather arm from Pennsylvania, scouts think there’s plenty left in the tank with Madden, who is now committed to Alabama.

BA Grade/Risk: 45/High
Track Record: Madden had Tommy John surgery after his senior season of high school and re-routed to Northwest Florida State JC rather than stick with his commitment to South Carolina. Madden delivered mediocre results in his long season with the Raiders, but the Angels liked his pure stuff and physical projection enough to draft him in the fourth round and sign him for an overslot $997,500 bonus. Madden didn't pitch in the regular season after signing, but he stood out in instructional league in the fall.
Scouting Report: Madden looks the part with a lanky 6-foot-6 frame and a powerful, loose right arm. His fastball sits 93-96 mph and touches 98 with heavy armside bore action and overwhelms hitters at its best. Madden's power slider flashes above-average with sweep across the zone with late vertical break, while his firm changeup is an average pitch with good diving action, although it is less consistent than the slider. Madden's stuff is explosive, but his control is fringe-average and he needs to refine his command to be more consistent. He has physical projection remaining and spent the winter in an offseason strength and conditioning program. Madden needs to refine the command of his full arsenal but the explosiveness – mixed with a projectable frame and athleticism – give him immense rotation upside.
The Future: Madden has the stuff to start but needs to refine his command to reach his rotation upside. He'll make his pro debut in 2023.
