School: NC State
Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
Age At Draft: 21.5
BA Grade: 50/High
Tools: Hit: 45. Power: 50. Run: 30. Field: 45. Arm: 55.
Cozart took over everyday catching duties as a freshman for North Carolina State in 2022 and has provided the Wolfpack with a source of lefthanded power, solid defense and arm strength behind the plate throughout his career. The 6-foot-3, 222-pound catcher is a career .281/.392/.510 hitter with 30 home runs and more walks than strikeouts. After a great 2023 summer with Team USA’s trials roster, there was some thought that he could be the top overall catcher in the class and go in a similar range as former N.C. State catcher Patrick Bailey, who went 13th overall in 2020. Hit tool questions during Cozart’s 2024 season probably have eliminated that possibility. Cozart has above-average raw power and a proven track record of walking at a solid clip, but his swing can get lengthy and steep. He has contact questions against breaking stuff and elite velocity that could give him more of a 40- or 45-grade hit tool projection. Cozart is slightly big for a catcher, but he has a chance to stick behind the plate and be solid with above-average arm strength. He has impressive feel to throw from multiple slots with carry and precision to the second base bag. Cozart will need to continue refining his framing, blocking and quickness getting out of a crouch, but there’s no reason to think he can’t stick at the position in pro ball.
