Scouts were drawn to Martin last summer and fall, when he was moving up the lists for clubs. This spring, the reaction from scouts has been more lukewarm, but there are still components to like. He’s an athletic shortstop with the actions and tools to stick at the position. His hands and feet work well at shortstop, where he’s an athletic mover with good body control who has a tick above-average arm strength. While his times home to first are slower, he’s a plus runner underway. At the plate, Martin’s hands work directly to the ball, and he turned in some quality at-bats last summer. Scouts who have seen him this spring have said he looks better in batting practice than he does in games. He flashes potential average raw power, though he didn’t do much extra-base damage this year, with swing and miss that made some scouts wonder whether he was trying to do too much as the draft approaches. Martin is a Rutgers commit whose talent level would fit at a more prominent school, so scouts consider him signable.
