Track Record: Gomez signed as a 19-year-old out of Venezuela in 2021 and pitched mostly in relief during his first two pro seasons, including at Low-A St. Lucie in 2022. He came out firing in spring 2023 to catch the attention of scouts on the minor league backfields with high-90s heat and a sharp high-80s slider. Assigned to High-A Brooklyn to work as a starter, Gomez struck out 12 in seven innings before succumbing to Tommy John surgery after three starts.
Scouting Report: Gomez is a solidly-built 6-foot-2 righthander who showed double-plus 97 mph velocity and above-average riding life prior to having TJS. His sharp, power slider tops near 89 mph and is a true swing-and-miss pitch with plus potential. Gomez toyed with a low-90s cutter briefly before going under the knife. He should get back on the mound around midseason 2024, when he will continue working to refine his strike-throwing and develop a changeup. Gomez was primarily a two-pitch pitcher in 2023, and given his relief background and below-average control--he walked nine of 33 batters faced in 2023--a move to the bullpen could be in his future.
The Future: Gomez will be just 22 years old when he returns and has obvious big league arm talent if he makes a full recovery. He could get on the MLB radar as soon as 2025 if moved to the bullpen.
