Track Record: Mendoza signed on June 30, 2021 and got into one game in the DSL. He’s a former center fielder who caught the Yankees eye thanks to the athleticism that comes from his background as a center fielder and a clean arm stroke. He returned to the DSL in 2022 for a full workload and led the league with 77 strikeouts. He moved stateside in 2023 and spent the year in the Florida Complex League, where he pitched in a piggyback role and showed dominant stuff over the course of 10 outings. Despite never making a start, his six wins led the FCL.
Scouting Report: Mendoza works with two pitches--a mid-90s four-seam fastball and a nasty slider in the mid 80s. His fastball can show hard sinking and boring action in on the hands of righthanded hitters, while the slider sweeps away from their barrels. The Yankees have worked with Mendoza to improve his delivery and get him moving in a better direction toward the plate, which they believe will help improve his control and command. He’s shown feel for a changeup but did not throw any in 2023.
The Future: Scouts see Mendoza as a pure relief prospect with the upside and arsenal to be a late-inning force. He’ll move to full-season for the first time in 2024.
