Track Record: A significant part of the Reds’ rebuilding effort has come through smart trade acquisitions. Acosta could be another success story, but the payoff might take a bit longer. A $1.8 million Padres’ signing in 2021, Acosta was traded to the Reds for Brandon Drury.
Scouting Report: Acosta is a switch-hitter who can play above-average defense at multiple infield spots, making him a hard guy to take out of the lineup. His lefthanded swing is better than his righthanded swing, but both should be effective and he has plenty of bat speed. He won’t be a slugger, but he should hit plenty of doubles. Acosta boosts his on-base percentage by consistently getting hit by pitches. He was once a plus runner, but he’s slowed down to average and he’s not much of a threat to steal bases. Acosta is an above-average defender at shortstop and is even better at second base. He hasn’t been asked to play third, but his hands, feet and arm would be solid there as well.
The Future: Acosta’s most likely profile is as a utility infielder, but he does enough things well to potentially carve out a role as a regular. His defense will give him plenty of opportunities to develop.

Track Record: As they traded away plenty of prospects in trades to build up the big league roster, the Padres signed Acosta for $1.8 million in 2021 to help restock the system. A year later, he was part of the next wave of prospects San Diego dealt, as he was sent to Cincinnati in the trade that brought Brandon Drury to the Padres. Acosta got into a few games with the Reds' Arizona Complex League before the season shut down.
Scouting Report: Acosta's first season in the U.S. wasn't as dominating as his exceptional Dominican Summer League debut in 2021, but his impressive extended spring bled into a solid season in the Arizona Complex League. Acosta's compact frame does limit his projection, but he already has plenty of plus tools with plus speed, a plus arm and a potentially above-average bat. His lefthanded swing is a little ahead of his righthanded swing. He has the bat speed to hit for both average and power. Defensively, he has the feet and hands to stick at shortstop, but he could also be a plus defender at second base.
The Future: Acosta is yet another in the Reds' overflowing bevy of young shortstop prospects. Whether he sticks at shortstop is partly dependent on his development, but it also will be affected by the Reds' limited number of innings at shortstop available in Class A as Cincinnati tries to get numerous players playing time.

Track Record: Acosta ranked as one of the top shortstops in the 2020-21 international signing class and signed with the Padres for $1.8 million, the highest bonus the club awarded that year. Acosta made his pro debut in the Dominican Summer League and made a strong first impression, finishing in the top 10 in the league in runs (45), triples (5), stolen bases (26) and on-base percentage (.431).
Scouting Report: Acosta has a loud mix of tools and athleticism to dream on. Though he's 5-foot-11, he has plenty of twitch and strength in his compact build. The switch-hitter has fastball bat speed and natural loft in his lefthanded swing that produces surprising power for a player his size. His slashing, righthanded slashing swing is beginning to catch up to his lefthanded swing, giving him the potential to be an above-average hitter with above-average power. Acosta is a plus runner and plays with energy. He has a nose for the ball and is both quick and graceful at shortstop. His plus arm plays anywhere on the infield.
The Future: Acosta is a projectable offensive talent who the Padres believe can stay at shortstop. He will make his stateside debut in the Arizona Complex League in 2022. -
Acosta projects as a true shortstop with a chance to be a plus defender at the position. A plus runner with an above-average arm, Acosta has quick reactions off the bat and nimble footwork, with good body control and instincts in the field. A switch-hitter, Acosta has a slashing offensive approach, with more bat speed and power from the left side. He trains with Hector Evertz and is expected to sign with the Padres with a bonus in the $1.5 to $2 million range.
