Track Record: One of the more prominent signings in the Tigers' 2021 international class, Bastidas seemed overmatched at times in his pro debut. But to his credit he bounced back to produce a solid season in the Florida Complex League in 2022. The Venezuelan native had drawn high praise for his defensive profile, polished from his work with Cesar and Maicer Izturis.
Scouting Report: Astidas is a tall, lanky shortstop. He's skinny and fluid, so he may be able to be a taller-than-average shortstop, but he also has the potential to thicken up and turn into a more powerful third baseman. Currently, his lack of functional strength is apparent. He makes excellent swing decisions, but pitchers do not need to fear him as he barely has gap power at this point. Bastidas has a fluid swing from both sides of the plate with fringe-average power that is expected to develop as his physique fills out. Defensively, Bastidas has quick feet, a good first step, an accurate above-average arm and instincts well beyond his years for reading the ball off the bat. He's an above-average runner
The Future: Still 19 years old, there is no cause for Detroit to rush Bastidas. Based on his success, he'll likely begin 2023 with Low A Lakeland. He remains one of the Tigers' most promising young position prospects.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 55. Power: 45. Speed: 55. Fielding: 55. Arm: 55. -
Track Record: The Tigers thought highly enough of Bastidas to sign him to a $1.175 million bonus, the second-largest deal in their 2021 international signing class. He appeared in 54 games with Detroit’s Dominican Summer League team, slashing .188/.324/.276.
Scouting Report: Bastidas is still in the early stages of his development, but it’s clear his bat is going to be the focal point as his body fills out. He produces a fluid swing from both sides of the plate and showed good hand-eye coordination as an amateur. He doesn’t impact the ball with much authority now, but there’s plenty of physical projection left on his long and lanky frame, and scouts project potential for future average power. As an amateur, Bastidas trained with Cesar and Maicer Izturis and received praise for his polished defensive profile. Bastidas’ slick glove remains intact. He manages the infield with light footwork, an above-average arm, good throwing accuracy and instincts well beyond his years.
The Future: Detroit is working to bolster its international presence and Bastidas, along with Cristian Santana, represents a strong step forward. Now, Tigers player development must work with Bastidas on his offensive development while his body matures. -
TRACK RECORD: The Tigers signed two prominent shortstops in their 2020-21 international class on Jan. 15, 2021, landing Cristian Santana from the Dominican Republic and Abel Bastidas from Venezuela.
SCOUTING REPORT: Basidas has a long, lanky frame with smooth defense at shortstop. Some scouts thought Bastidas might outgrow the position and end up at third base, but others thought as long as he stayed lean and agile he should be able to handle shortstop. Bastidas is a fundamentally sound fielder with soft hands and fluid, easy actions. He plays calm and under control for his age with a good internal clock, an above-average arm and speed that has trended up to above-average, though he might slow down as he fills out. Bastidas is a switch-hitter with a loose, easy swing from both sides of the plate with good hand-eye coordination. The ball carries off his bat well with occasional over-the-fence juice to his pull side and the physical projection to grow into significantly more power once he fills out.
THE FUTURE: Bastidas has promising projection indicators, though he’s still several years from being in the big league picture. He will make his pro debut in 2021.

Bastidas has a promising mix of physical upside and smoothness on both sides of the ball. With a lanky, projectable build, Bastidas has a fluid swing with good bat path from both sides of the plate, performing well in games with good feel for the barrel. He's still lean but showing flashes of power now with the strength projection for more to come once he adds weight. While some scouts think Bastidas might outgrow shortstop, others feel he will stick there, pointing to his soft hands and easy, fluid actions. The Tigers are expected to sign Bastidas, who trains with Cesar and Maicer Izturis. -
