Guzman has the best arm of any catcher in the country. It’s an 80-grade tool that he loves to show off by throwing behind runners, getting rid of the ball quickly to erase anyone straying too far off the bag. Guzman’s pop times are regularly between 1.75 to 1.9 seconds, with multiple throws where he has backhanded a breaking ball in the dirt for a pop time under 1.9 seconds. Guzman has a thicker build and will need to stay on top of his conditioning, but with soft hands, quick actions and good defensive instincts, Guzman has the elements to develop into a plus-plus defender who can shut down the running game. Offensively, there are more questions. He projects to hit toward the bottom of a lineup, with swing-and-miss risk. He loads up with a leg kick, wraps his bat in a swing with some length, showing mostly doubles power with occasional pull-side home runs, but he doesn’t project to be a big power threat. A team that either sees more offensive upside or that places a greater premium on elite catching defense could take him in the top five rounds. His arm strength also gives him a fallback option as a power reliever who could be throwing 100 mph one day.
