Coming into the season, McCoy, a Maryland signee, had several encouraging projection arrows pointing up. He’s a long, lanky 6-foot-5, 180 pounds, throws strikes and touched 91 mph last summer, leaving scouts dreaming on his potential to add weight and velocity. This spring, that hasn’t been the case, as McCoy remains extremely thin, touched 90 mph and was mostly around 86-88 mph his first five starts before his May 9 outing ended after two innings, with McCoy shut down since then. The results have still been impressive for McCoy, who didn’t allow a run in 23 innings this spring and has consistently been a prolific strike-thrower. That’s somewhat surprising given his mechanics, as it’s a funky delivery where he throws across his body without the cleanest arm action into a lower slot, but he does not issue many walks. McCoy maintains his arm speed well on his changeup, which doesn’t have standout movement but looks like a fastball coming out of his hand, enabling him to catch hitters leaning out front. It’s a more advanced pitch than his slider, which has his moments flashing as a fringe-average pitch but will need more development.
