A projection righthander with a 6-foot-3, 192-pound frame, Murphy has a whippy arm and potential starter profile with a solid three-pitch mix. Murphy filled up the strike zone for scouts last summer, but this spring he struggled to command his fastball at its peak velocity (94-95 mph) with consistency. He will pitch in the low 90s and has shown flashes of an above-average slider and changeup at best. The slider is a hard pitch that gets into the mid 80s and has short break for the most part, but hard tilt when he throws a good one. His changeup has likewise flashed solid and last fall scouts thought it might be his best offering as a plus pitch, but it hasn’t been quite as good this spring. Murphy is a good mover and athlete on the mound, but he has a lengthy, plunging arm action and some violence throughout his finish that could lead to some of the inconsistencies in stuff and control scouts have noted. When everything is on, Murphy has an electric three-pitch mix, and he still has strength gains coming. Murphy is committed to Auburn, and it wouldn’t be surprising for him to massively increase his draft stock if he makes it to campus.
