Martinez, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound lefty, sported a 4-3 record with a 4.86 ERA heading into the College World Series finals for Oklahoma this spring. In 63 innings, Martinez fanned 67 to go along with a .251 opponent batting average. Scouts marvel at the looseness and fluidity in his delivery. With a clean arm action releasing from a three-quarters slot, Martinez’s fastball can dabble in the mid 90s while inducing swing and miss, especially up in the zone. The southpaw’s top secondary pitch is his slider. The offering sits in the mid 80s with sweeping action that wreaks havoc on lefthanded hitters. Martinez will flash a changeup to righthanded hitters that dives away when timed up, but overall the pitch needs fine tuning and further development. Consistency is an area of Martinez’s game that will need polishing. He did make eight starts for the Sooners this spring but has thrived more out of the bullpen. Martinez needs to continue to develop and hone his game, but still has a shot at going in the seventh-to-10th-round range.
