A slick-fielding Puerto Rican shortstop, Ortiz was voted the second-best defensive infielder in the 2022 high school class by MLB scouting directors prior to this spring. He transferred to IMG Academy for his senior season, where he was scouted heavily along with prospects like Elijah Green, Brandon Barriera and Brady Neal—to name just a few. Ortiz stands out for his glovework. He can really pick it, with impressive and fluid actions up the middle and above-average arm strength. His instincts should be good enough to stick at the position and be an asset, but his offensive game is a real question mark. The 6-foot, 162-pound righthanded hitter lacks strength currently and has very little power, and he also swings and misses frequently enough that scouts question his pitch recognition. Because of that, he might be better served getting to campus at Florida International and developing as a hitter—though there’s no doubting his defensive ability at a premium position.
