Vastine was a prominent high school prospect in the 2021 draft class, where he ranked as the No. 207 prospect thanks to a well-rounded game and likely middle-infield profile. He played second base for Vanderbilt in 2022 before assuming the everyday shortstop role in 2023 and has hit .280/.356/.463 in three seasons for the program, though he did hit .306 in an impressive 2023 stint with Bourne in the Cape Cod League. While his brief wood bat track record might encourage some about his future offensive chances, he’s ultimately shown too much swing-and-miss in college to expect an average hit tool. He’s both overly aggressive with his swing decisions and whiffs too much against all pitch types and ran a 70% contact rate in his three years at Vanderbilt. He’ll flash occasional pull-side power but should also be a below-average power source with an undersized, 5-foot-11, 165-pound frame. Vastine’s value is driven by his glove and improved profile as a shortstop. He’s shown great actions and above-average range at the position, with sound glove work, an advanced internal clock and above-average arm strength. He takes good angles to the ball and can throw while off-balance and from multiple arm angles and should stick at the position as an above-average defender. He’s a solid-average runner and fine basestealer.
