Organization Prospect Rankings
Weichard became the first Australian ever to play in the Pirates organization when he came over in a trade with the Diamondbacks. He has plenty of raw skills that have yet to translate into baseball ability. He’s strong and has power potential, though he didn't hit a home run in his two seasons in Arizona's system. He has above-average speed, which gives him a chance to become an accomplished defensive center fielder and basestealer. He didn't play much baseball while growing up in Australia and is learning the basics of the game. His swing is mechanical and stiff, and combined with his free-swinging tendencies, has held him back as a hitter. Weichard is tightly muscled and prone to injury. He continually has been bothered by hamstring pulls and back strains throughout his four pro seasons. He has the tools to become a fine player. Whether he ever learns how to put those tools to work remains to be seen. He’s a project and at least three years away from the majors.
