Age At Draft: 21.5
Pitelli entered the 2023 season with a reputation as a slick-fielding defensive shortstop with a light lefthanded bat. After hitting under .250 in his first two seasons with Miami in 2021 and 2022, as well as struggling in summer leagues, Pitelli had the best offensive season of his career in 2023. He led all ACC shortstops with 13 home runs and was also named a semi-finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award that is annually presented to the best defensive shortstop in the country. Pitelli slashed .294/.380/.525 with a 22.3% strikeout rate and 9.1% walk rate. Despite Pitelli’s season, there’s likely too much swing-and-miss in Pitelli’s game to ever project him as an average hitter, and he has below-average power as well. He occasionally showed surprising pop and turned on balls with authority at times with spring, with a bit more physicality than he had in previous years, but at 5-foot-11, 182 pounds and with modest exit velocities he doesn’t project for more than 5-9 home runs in pro ball with a wood bat. Pitelli has shortstop actions in the middle of the dirt and should stick at the position at the next level, with reliable hands, a quick transfer and plus arm strength. He has impressive body control and balance, with the ability to throw from angels all over the diamond and without his feet set—and he also has an advanced internal clock and knows when to fully let loose with his throws. Pitelli’s offensive performance could create more optimism about a well-rounded game, but he still looks like a glove-first shortstop at the next level who will make all the plays you need and then some.
