Dowd spent the first two seasons of his Stanford career splitting time as a starter and reliever, and started 15 games as a sophomore in 2022. He started three games in 2023 as well, but spent the most of his season in the bullpen, where he posted a 4.70 ERA over 53.2 total innings. Scouts think his stuff plays better in a relief role, and his career-high 30.4% strikeout rate in 2023 backs that up. Dowd sits more 92-93 out of the pen, which is a few ticks higher than he typically shows in a starting role, and touches 95 from the left side with solid riding life. His secondaries include a curveball around 80 mph that has aggressive downer finish and generated a whiff rate of 53%. He’s also shown some feel for a mid-80s changeup that could be a usable third pitch. Dowd has battled inconsistencies and he has always had fringy control, but he has potential as a lefthanded reliever with a chance for a bit more velocity in the tank.
