Age At Draft: 22
Brooks has been a key piece for John Savage’s pitching staff since he was a true freshman in 2021. He’s always had solid strikeout and walk numbers, but after 159 career innings and 27 starts, he has a 4.92 career ERA with a 22% strikeout rate and 5.1% walk rate. Brooks has a low-maintenance operation and throws from a mid, three-quarter slot. His fastball will sit in the 88-91 mph range and touch 92 with natural arm-side run and his 80 mph changeup, although it has a low miss rate, has tons of fade and is a pitch he’s comfortable throwing to both righthanded and lefthanded hitters. Brooks also features a shorter slider that acts like a cutter. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound righthander has above-average command of all three offerings, so he could profile as a back-of-the-rotation starter if he adds a bit more power in pro ball. He could be a late day two or day three draft pick.

A lean, 6-foot-4, 200-pound righthander, Brooks has shown impressive touch and feel for UCLA throughout his career. After pitching mostly out of the bullpen in 2021, Brooks moved into a full-time starting role for the 2022 season and posted a 3.96 ERA through 10 starts and 63.2 innings, with 57 strikeouts (22.3 K%) and just 10 walks (3.9 BB%). Brooks didn’t throw again after his April 22 outing against California thanks to an arm injury that ended his season. He fills up the zone with a sinker/slider/changeup combination and primarily pitches around 90 mph, touching 93 at peak. A low-80s slider is Brooks’ best swing-and-miss offering, but he primarily finds success with a groundball profile. Despite the lack of power stuff, Brooks’ fastball has trended in the right direction and there is still some projection to his frame. With good feel to mix and match his three-pitch mix, there could be teams hoping to help him find a bit more velocity in pro ball when he is fully healthy.
