View Draft Report
A slender, 6-foot-3, 170-pound righthander, Heubeck has flashed a loud three-pitch mix and has only improved his game since flashing stuff with inconsistent control last summer. Heubeck has a loose and fast arm and has been up into the mid 90s at his best, though he more typically sits in the 90-93 mph range. His best secondary pitch is a hard, downer curveball in the mid 70s with 12-to-6 shape and impressive depth. He also throws a low-80s changeup that was seen as a distant third pitch last summer but scouts this spring have said Heubeck will flash plus grades with all three of his pitches. What could separate Heubeck from many of the other prep pitchers in the 2021 class is his outstanding natural ability to spin the baseball. He reportedly grades out well in every spin metric, and he has the current pitch-mix to excel with a north-south attack pattern by getting his fastball above barrels at the top of the zone and then burying a hard breaking ball at the bottom. While Heubeck has a fairly easy delivery that doesn’t come with much effort, he has struggled to throw consistent strikes at times. He pitches out of an up-tempo windup, but he’ll need to refine his command to make the most out of his impressive pure stuff. Some scouts think his lean frame offers some physical projection in the future, while others question how much weight he’ll be able to put on even at physical maturity. Heubeck is committed to Wake Forest.

BA Grade: 50/Extreme
Track Record: Heubeck pitched Baltimore’s Gilman High to the 2021 Maryland state championship as a senior and was drafted by the Dodgers in the third round. He signed for an above-slot $1.272 million to forgo a Wake Forest commitment. Heubeck flashed loud stuff but horrendous control in his first full season at Low-A Rancho Cucamonga, and repeated the level to start 2023. He cut his walk rate by nearly one-third while maintaining his premium stuff and earned a late promotion to High-A Great Lakes.
Scouting Report: Heubeck is a lean, projectable righthander, who keeps getting stronger. His lively, riding fastball sits 92-93 mph, touches 96 and has room to keep adding velocity as he fills out. His big-breaking, 78-80 mph curveball is a potentially plus pitch with depth and power, and he added a tight-spinning, mid-80s slider that already shows above-average potential. He rarely throws his 84-87 mph changeup, but it flashes average with fade and sink. Heubeck has the pitch mix and clean, easy delivery of a starter, but his control is well below-average. He struggles to repeat his delivery and misses his spots by large margins, leading to excessive wild pitches.
The Future: Heubeck’s stuff is potent, but he needs to add strength and coordination and improve his control. Those will be his main goals in 2024.

Track Record: Heubeck emerged early as the top pitcher in a banner 2021 Maryland prep class that included Padres first-rounder Jackson Merrill. He struck out 15 batters in the state semifinals to help lead Baltimore's Gilman High to a championship and was drafted by the Dodgers in the third round, signing for $1,269,500 to forgo a Wake Forest commitment. Heubeck impressed in extended spring training to start the 2022 season, but his control disappeared when he moved to Low-A Rancho Cucamonga in June. He posted a 7.39 ERA in 15 games with the Quakes and failed to last more than three innings in any start.
Scouting Report: Heubeck is a tall, lean righthander who has lots of room to add weight and strength. He's a good athlete with a quick arm and already sits 92-95 mph with late life on his fastball. His best pitch is a plus overhand curveball that sits 77-80 mph with depth and bite at the bottom of the zone. He relies heavily on those two pitches and should add more velocity to both as he gets stronger. He also has a changeup that is still developing and flashes average with slight fade and dive. Heubeck has intriguing stuff, but his lack of strength results in an effortful delivery and below-average control. He struggles to maintain his velocity and tires quickly.
The Future: Heubeck has to get stronger to fulfill his back-of-the-rotation starter potential. Adding strength will be his primary goal in 2023.
Scouting Grades: Fastball: 55. Curveball: 60. Changeup: 45. Control: 30 -
Track Record: Heubeck emerged as one of the top prep pitchers in the Northeast and led Gilman High to the Maryland Class A state title in the spring, highlighted by a 15-strikeout performance in the semifinals. The Dodgers drafted him in the third round and signed him for a $1,269,500 bonus. Heubeck impressed with nine strikeouts in only four innings in the Arizona Complex League after signing, and then became a favorite of Dodgers officials during instructional league.
Scouting Report: Heubeck is a thin, projectable 6-foot-3 righthander who keeps trending up. His fastball sits 90-91 mph with elite riding life at the top of the strike zone and should tick up as he fills out physically. Heubeck complements his fastball with a plus, 12-to-6 curveball in the low 80s with impressive depth and power. He effectively throws his fastball up and curveball down to give him the north-south profile teams covet. Heubeck mostly relies on those two pitches but has flashed an average changeup. He has an easy delivery and a clean arm action that give him average control.
The Future: Heubeck has a promising foundation but needs to get stronger. He’ll head to Low-A Rancho Cucamonga in 2022.
