Benes is the son of 14-year major league veteran and former No. 1 overall pick (1988) Andy Benes. He entered the offseason as a priority player for the spring but then blew out his knee playing basketball in February, so he did not play this spring. Benes was the starting shortstop for three straight state title teams and has the tools to be a profile third baseman, with the potential for above-average power and arm strength. The ball jumps off his bat, and he had the highest exit velocity of any recorded batted ball at the World Wood Bat Championships in Jupiter, Fla. last fall. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Benes has an athletic, strong build and has been up to 91 mph off the mound. He was not scheduled to resume baseball activities before the draft, increasing the likelihood of him fulfilling his commitment to Missouri.
