After spending a year at Oklahoma State, Cheney transferred to McLennan (Texas) JC where he became the team's ace. He went 10-3, 3.20 with 122 strikeouts in 81.2 innings. Cheney showed above-average control of a 90-92 mph fastball, a solid slider and a changeup that got better and better throughout the season. He held opponents to a .194 average. Cheney was extremely consistent and constantly around the strike zone. He walked 20 all season. He's committed to Texas if he doesn't go pro.
