Track Record: A velocity spike during his junior spring at South Carolina-Aiken sent Spence up draft boards in 2019 and the Yankees pounced in the 10th round, signing him to a $122,500 bonus. Spence spent all of 2022 and 2023 in the upper levels of the Yankees system, posting a 4.47 ERA with 153 strikeouts in 163 innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2023. New York left him off its 40-man roster and the A’s took him no. 1 overall in the 2023 Rule 5 draft.
Scouting Report: Spence shows the ability to manipulate his fastball to both sides of the plate, although his arsenal would benefit from adding a bit more power. He primarily attacks hitters with a low-90s four-seamer that has cutting action and also mixes in a two-seamer with armside run that is a tick or two harder. He pairs it with a low-to-mid-80s breaking ball that elicits whiffs both inside and outside the strike zone. He’ll occasionally work in a low-spin mid-80s changeup.
The Future: Spence will have ample opportunity to carve out a role in 2024 as a Rule 5 selection. He can provide the A’s length in the back of their rotation, although his arsenal may take a step forward in shorter spurts and allow for a role as a low-leverage reliever.
