Hobbs first rose to prominence when he threw a no-hitter in the CIF playoffs two years in a row for Corona (Calif.) High. He pitched out of the bullpen his first two years at St. Mary’s and became the Gaels closer as a sophomore, but he had Tommy John surgery and missed most of the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He made 19 relief appearances for St. Mary’s this spring and posted a 0.72 ERA with six saves. Hobbs’ stuff has steadily come back the farther he’s moved away from surgery. His fastball sits 91-92 mph and touches 96 and his low-80s vertical breaking ball a swing-and-miss pitch he can land in the strike zone or get chase swings with. Hobbs’ control is below-average and his effortful delivery makes him purely a reliever moving forward. His stuff has a chance to continue ticking up as he gets farther removed from surgery.
