A two-way player at Stanford, Matthiesen has pitched for three years in the Cardinal bullpen, but started six games this spring as a junior, pitching off of a cutter/curveball combination. Most scouts think his pro future is as a hitter though. He's a big-bodied outfielder who's listed at 6-foot-7, 220-pounds, and that frame might push him to first base eventually, but scouts think he's athletic enough to handle an outfield spot. He hit .320/.399/.528 this spring with nine home runs, and scouts believe he could tap into more power and cut down his strikeouts at the next level if he's only focused on hitting. That said, the strikeouts are a concern, and Matthiesen whiffed 20 percent of the time this spring.
