Track Record: The Rays signed Molina out of Venezuela during the 2018 international signing period. He was primarily a reliever over his first three professional seasons before the Rays moved him into a starting role late in 2022. In 2023, he made 27 starts between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham. Molina showed strong control and walked just 6.9% of batters over 122 innings. Molina was left unprotected for the Rule 5 draft and was selected by the Rockies.
Scouting Report: Molina is an aggressive strike-thrower with a powerful three-pitch mix. He throws a four-seam fastball, slider and changeup and consistently lands all three for strikes. Molina’s four-seamer sits 94-96 mph with above-average ride and run, but is a below-average whiff-generator. He mixes his slider and changeup equally but neither misses many bats. His slider sits between 85-86 mph with cutter shape, and his changeup is a mid-80s offering with fade. He has above-average control.
The Future: Molina has a starter’s command but his strike-throwing, above-average velocity and Rule 5 status might push him to the bullpen.
