View Draft Report
Gonzalez is an on-base machine who managed a .442 on-base percentage over three years at Georgia Tech with more walks (91, 15.9 BB%) than strikeouts (74, 13.0 K%) for his career. During his junior 2022 season, Gonzalez hit .339/.458/.474 with five home runs and 14 doubles and he’s also shown similar plate discipline in the Cape Cod League, where he hit .331/.418/.380 with 17 walks and 15 strikeouts in 32 games in 2021. A 6-foot, 185-pound outfielder, Gonzalez is an excellent contact hitter who rarely swings and misses (just an 11% whiff rate this spring) but has always lacked home run power. His five home runs were a career high and his raw power and exit velocities suggest a hitter who will always be more of a gap-to-gap doubles bat than a slugger. Because of that, Gonzalez could be a tweener profile if he doesn’t stick in center field and he’s played mostly left field throughout his college career despite being a good runner. If he can’t play center, his arm makes him a better fit for left and at that point he’ll need more power to profile as even a part-time big leaguer.

BA Grade: 40/High
Track Record: In three seasons at Georgia Tech and a stint in the Cape Cod League, Gonzalez earned a rep as a professional hitter with an outstanding feel for the strike zone. He had more walks (91) than strikeouts (74) in college, though those numbers came without much power. The Pirates took him in the fifth round of the 2022 draft and signed him for $347,500. He spent most of the 2023 season at High-A Greensboro, where continued to show solid plate skills but without the impact needed for a corner outfield spot.
Scouting Report: Gonzalez’s offensive game is predicated on his strong idea of the strike zone. His exit velocities are below-average, but he does a nice job connecting with pitches in the zone. His barrel accuracy could stand to improve, and his bat path doesn’t keep the barrel in the zone long enough. Gonzalez is a fringy defender with a fringy arm who fits in a corner, which adds more pressure to develop the power necessary to profile at the position. Gonzalez is an average runner.
The Future: Gonzalez will head to Double-A in 2024. At Altoona, his developmental goals will involve cleanup of his bat path in order to tap into more impact. He’s likely a backup outfielder whose value is in the batter’s box.

A 6-foot, 165-pound outfielder committed to Georgia Tech, Gonzalez is a plus runner who's other tools are closer to average. He's a sound player with good makeup, a line drive swing and good route-running in center field. With solid athleticism and impressive makeup, many area scouts are fond of Gonzalez, though some wonder if he has enough tools to buy out of high school with his current physicality and lack of impact. He does have good contact ability and you could dream on his power potential in the future with increased muscle gains, but he's a player who could make it to campus, play well and improve his stock in three years.
