Arizona State endured its worst season ever, and scouts said few if any Sun Devils were being crosschecked. Shaps was the team's top talent before being kicked off the team in April as coach Tracy Smith pruned the roster, removing five players. Shaps has the tools to get drafted. He's a plus runner with an average to above-average arm in center field. He has athleticism and quick hands, though he doesn't use his lower half well and gets rotational in his swing, leading to too many balls hit on the ground. His dismissal from the team did nothing to help his draft stock, but scouts liked him as a grinder before that.
