The Reds saw Ruiz playing for the Mexican national team and the Tijuana Toros and signed him just shy of his 17th birthday. He played third base in Mexico, but the Reds think he can catch, and he played behind the plate in all 22 of his games in the Arizona League. He didn't have much experience at that position before the 2017 season, but he has a mature frame, plenty of strength and a plus arm. He has a line-drive approach and plus power potential, especially to the pull side. His numbers weren't great in Arizona, but the Reds liked his competitiveness and toughness.
